Sage Leaves, Card XX: Judgement, December 17, 2024
Helping People Heal Through Tarot
Welcome to Sage Leaves, a compendium of wisdom for those seeking to heal ancestral wounds using Tarot as an assistant. In this issue, we will explore the archetype of Judgement and relate it to the Heroine’s Journey, as well as explore how the card is read when it appears in a reading conducted for transgenerational healing. It seems apt that our exploration of the Judgement card, the penultimate Major Arcana card, falls during the week of Winter Solstice, our shortest day of sunlight in the Northern hemisphere. Like Solstice, which marks the point at which days begin growing longer, Judgement too asks us to make a change.

This week the Solstice marks the turning point of the Sun as the nights will slowly lengthen, even as the grip of Winter tightens its grasp. A miniature Yule Cat overlooks our readings as we prepare for the longest night of the year.
Card XX: Judgement
Spotlight on a Jungian Archetype: Judgement
The Tarot's Judgement card holds profound significance in Jungian psychology, resonating deeply with the processes of transformation, individuation, and spiritual awakening. As an archetype, it symbolizes rebirth, accountability, and the reconciliation of the psyche's fragmented aspects into a unified whole. It reflects the call to transcend ego-based living and align with the higher Self, a central theme in Carl Jung’s framework of personal development. This card embodies the call to transcend past limitations, integrate unconscious aspects of the psyche, and embrace a higher, unified sense of self.
The imagery often associated with Judgement —such as figures rising from coffins to the sound of an angel’s trumpet—echoes the archetypal themes of resurrection and renewal. Jung would associate this imagery with symbolic resurrection of the individual’s potential after facing the “shadow” — those hidden or repressed parts of the self. This process mirrors the alchemical "solve et coagula" (dissolve and reconstitute), where old patterns dissolve, giving way to new, cohesive understanding.
For Jung, this represents a critical juncture in the individuation process: the individual is invited to confront and integrate their shadow, which includes repressed fears, desires, and unresolved conflicts. By facing this shadow, the ego undergoes a metaphorical death, clearing the way for a more expansive and authentic self to emerge.
The card also speaks to the experience of the numinous, a term Jung used to describe encounters with the divine or transcendent. The angel’s trumpet signifies a call from the collective unconscious, urging the individual to awaken to a greater purpose beyond personal limitations. This mirrors Jung’s concept of synchronicity, where external events align meaningfully with internal transformation, reinforcing the sense of a guided journey toward wholeness.
As an archetype, Judgement resonates with themes of redemption, accountability, and renewal. It challenges the individual to review their life’s narrative and acknowledge where growth is needed. This mirrors the psychological process of self-reflection and integration, a critical step in Jung’s individuation journey. The angel’s call symbolizes a connection to the collective unconscious, suggesting a divine or universal purpose guiding personal transformation.
In a transpersonal context, Judgement relates to karmic release and healing across generations. It urges the querent to examine inherited patterns and unresolved ancestral influences. Judgement is about liberation from karmic cycles and inherited traumas, making it particularly relevant for healing generational wounds. It invites the querent to rise above the weight of the past, seeing life from a broader, spiritual perspective.
Jung’s emphasis on the collective unconscious supports this interpretation, as it recognizes the interconnectedness of individual and collective experiences. By responding to the call of Judgement , one can break free from these cycles and embrace a liberated, integrated existence.
Ultimately, the card symbolizes redemption and the culmination of the individuation journey. It represents the moment when the ego aligns fully with the Self, achieving harmony and wholeness. In this sense, Judgement is not an end but a new beginning—an archetypal call to live in deeper truth and connection with both the inner and outer worlds.
In a Tarot reading, the card serves as a wake-up call, urging the querent to act in alignment with their true self. For Jung, this would signify an alignment of the ego with the Self — the culmination of the individuation process, where the individual achieves wholeness and embraces their highest potential.
Heroine & Judgement
Judgement & The Heroine’s Journey
In the Heroine’s Journey, the Judgement card symbolizes a pivotal moment of transformation and liberation, marking the resolution of inner and external struggles and the transition into a new phase of empowerment and spiritual integration. This card plays a key role in helping the heroine confront and transcend her limitations, embrace her authenticity, and align with her higher purpose.
The Call to Transformation
At this stage in the Heroine’s Journey, the Judgement card often represents a wake-up call—an invitation for the heroine to reflect on her past choices, confront her shadow, and integrate lessons from her trials. Carl Jung's concept of individuation parallels this process, as the heroine is called to reconcile fragmented parts of her psyche to achieve wholeness. In this phase, the heroine experiences a profound reckoning, where she reviews her journey, acknowledges her growth, and sheds old identities that no longer serve her.
Rebirth and Reclamation
The Judgement card also signifies rebirth, a central theme in the Heroine’s Journey. This archetypal moment occurs when the heroine steps into her true power, guided by self-awareness and a deep connection to her inner wisdom. She embraces her role as a co-creator of her destiny, breaking free from the societal, ancestral, or personal constraints that once held her back. This rebirth is not only personal but also transpersonal, as the heroine often feels a calling to serve a greater purpose or heal collective wounds.
Liberation and Legacy
In the broader arc of the journey, Judgement represents the culmination of the heroine’s trials and the emergence of a new vision for her life. The card emphasizes liberation from guilt, shame, and fear, offering a profound sense of renewal and empowerment. It encourages the heroine to accept accountability for her choices while understanding that forgiveness—both for herself and others—is key to her liberation.
The Bridge to Wholeness
As the heroine responds to the energy of Judgement , she bridges the gap between her inner and outer worlds, embodying her authentic self and stepping into her role as a leader, healer, or guide. This final phase of the Heroine’s Journey prepares her to share her insights, creating a ripple effect that inspires others and contributes to collective healing.
Ultimately, the Judgement card in the Heroine’s Journey acts as the herald of transformation, urging the heroine to leave behind the past and step boldly into the future. Its themes of reflection, forgiveness, and rebirth resonate deeply, affirming that her journey has prepared her for this moment of spiritual and emotional liberation.
Card XX: The Judgement Card for Transgenerational Healing
Judgement in a Reading for Transgenerational Healing
The Judgement card in Tarot is one of the most transformative cards, embodying themes of reckoning, awakening, and liberation. Its presence in a reading focused on transgenerational healing signifies a pivotal moment of clarity and renewal for the querent and their ancestral line.
Reckoning and Awareness
At its core, the Judgement card represents a call to face the past with honesty and courage. In the context of transgenerational healing, this card invites the querent to confront the inherited patterns, traumas, and unresolved issues that have traveled through their family lineage. It acts as a mirror, reflecting not only individual struggles but also the collective challenges of ancestors whose lives may have influenced the querent’s current circumstances.
For example, the querent might explore patterns of fear, shame, or disconnection that appear across generations. The card emphasizes accountability—not in assigning blame to past generations but in recognizing how these dynamics have shaped their own life. This awareness is the first step toward breaking free from cycles that perpetuate harm.
Liberation and Forgiveness
The Judgement card is deeply tied to the concept of liberation. It encourages the querent to release burdens that are not theirs to carry, whether these are ancestral guilt, grief, or limiting beliefs passed down over time. This release is both an act of healing and a reclaiming of agency, allowing the querent to choose a new way forward.
Forgiveness plays a crucial role in this process. The card prompts the querent to practice forgiveness—not only toward themselves for their perceived shortcomings but also toward their ancestors. By recognizing the humanity of those who came before, and understanding the context of their struggles, the querent can let go of resentment and create a space of compassion.
Awakening to Legacy
The card's imagery often depicts figures rising from graves, symbolizing a rebirth of spirit and a rising above old limitations. In a reading about ancestral healing, this imagery takes on added depth: it represents the awakening of the querent to their family’s legacy and their role in transforming it. This awakening might manifest as newfound respect for ancestral strengths, a deeper understanding of inherited challenges, or a commitment to breaking unhealthy cycles.
Judgement also suggests the importance of honoring ancestral stories. This could include learning about family history, preserving traditions, or engaging in rituals that acknowledge and respect the lives of those who came before.
Rebirth and Renewal
The card's association with renewal underscores its transformative potential. As the querent integrates the lessons of the past, they are empowered to rewrite their narrative. This rebirth is not just personal but can ripple forward to impact future generations. By healing inherited wounds and establishing healthier patterns, the querent becomes a bridge between the past and the future.
For instance, a querent working to heal a legacy of emotional repression might use this card’s guidance to cultivate open communication in their family. In doing so, they not only heal themselves but also pave the way for healthier dynamics in their descendants.
Integration and Empowerment
The ultimate message of Judgement in transgenerational healing is one of integration. It calls for the querent to hold the complexities of their ancestry—the pain, the resilience, the love—and weave these elements into a cohesive understanding of themselves. This integration fosters empowerment, enabling the querent to move forward with clarity and purpose.
The card's influence in a reading is profound, offering the querent an opportunity to step into their power as a healer within their lineage. It serves as a reminder that while the past informs the present, it does not dictate the future. Through awareness, forgiveness, and renewal, the querent can transform inherited burdens into a legacy of strength and wholeness.

As the week begins, the 6 of Swords invites you to transition from turmoil to calm waters. You may find yourself leaving behind mental clutter or emotional baggage that no longer serves you. This card signals that while the journey toward clarity might be slow, it is necessary. With Jupiter retrograde, introspection will guide you to reassess your path, steering toward healing and intellectual balance.
The 10 of Wands reflects a sense of overwhelm and the weight of accumulated responsibilities. It’s a reminder to evaluate what burdens are truly yours to carry. Are you overextending yourself to meet others’ expectations? With the lingering retrograde energy, ask yourself what obligations you can release. Lighten your load by setting boundaries and delegating tasks, ensuring your energy aligns with your priorities.
The King of Swords brings clarity and authority, urging you to approach decisions with intellect and impartiality. This is a day for strategic planning, as you channel reason and objectivity to solve problems. The card’s influence emphasizes clear communication and leadership. Whether in personal or professional matters, align your words and actions to your truth, ensuring fairness guides your choices.
The appearance of The Tower suggests a dramatic shift or revelation. This card represents upheaval, but its energy is ultimately liberating. A sudden change may disrupt old structures or beliefs, forcing you to confront what is no longer sustainable. While this process can feel unsettling, trust that it clears the way for authenticity and growth. Be open to letting go, knowing that transformation often arises from chaos.
On the day of the Winter Solstice, Judgement encourages reflection and rebirth. As the Sun enters Capricorn, this card symbolizes accountability and the call to awaken to your higher purpose. It’s a powerful moment to review the lessons of the past year, release regrets, and embrace renewal. In the context of your week, Judgement invites you to recognize how the challenges of The Tower serve as catalysts for profound growth.
The 7 of Wands highlights resilience and the need to defend your position amidst external challenges. Use this energy to assert yourself with confidence. This card reinforces the importance of standing firm in your convictions while remaining adaptable to changing circumstances.
As the week closes, Temperance returns, offering a soothing counterbalance to the intensity of recent days. This card symbolizes harmony, moderation, and the integration of opposites. After the upheaval of The Tower and the reckoning of Judgement, Temperance encourages you to find your center. Embrace patience and perspective as you create balance in your inner and outer worlds.
This week’s narrative is woven through recurring motifs of transformation and integration. The Major Arcana (The Tower, Judgement, Temperance ) emphasize spiritual evolution and the need for adaptability during periods of change. Together, they suggest a story of dismantling outdated structures (The Tower), awakening to personal accountability (Judgement), and finding equilibrium (Temperance).
The recurring presence of Temperance reflects an ongoing lesson in balance and moderation. It’s a reminder that the chaos of life is often a prelude to harmony. Meanwhile, the dual sevens (7 of Wands and previously seen cards) highlight persistence and self-belief in the face of challenges. The swords and wands in this spread suggest an interplay of intellect and action. The 6 of Swords and King of Swords focus on clarity and strategic thinking, while the 10 of Wands and 7 of Wands highlight the energy of perseverance.
This week offers a profound arc of challenge and renewal.
